Lafarge Convicted of Funding Terrorism

In a landmark ruling, the French cement manufacturer Lafarge, now a subsidiary of Holcim, has been convicted of financing jihadist groups during the Syrian civil war.

The court found that the company paid millions of euros to groups such as ISIS and the Nusra Front between 2013 and 2014 to keep its factory running in northern Syria.

Eight former employees were found guilty, with former CEO Bruno Lafont receiving a six-year jail sentence.

This case represents the first time a multinational corporation has been convicted in France for financing terrorism.
