Cuba Plunged Into Total Blackout Again

The entire Cuban national electricity grid disconnected around midday on Monday, leaving roughly ten million people in the dark.

State utility UNE said the “total disconnection” was under investigation, but the root cause was clear: an acute shortage of fuel, exacerbated by the Trump administration’s blockade on oil shipments to the island.

This marks the third nationwide blackout in six months and comes as the Caribbean nation’s aging power plants struggle to cope with shrinking reserves.

Officials warned that restoration could take days, renewing fears of civil unrest in a country already grappling with severe economic distress.
