Aung San Suu Kyi's sentence cut

Aung San Suu Kyi's sentence cut

Suu Kyi, who has been held since the 2021 coup, was serving a 27-year sentence for a variety of offenses that her supporters say were politically motivated.

While her sentence has been shortened, the 80-year-old Nobel laureate remains in custody, unlike her close ally Win Myint who was fully pardoned.

The amnesty comes as the junta faces increasing pressure from ethnic minority insurgencies and international sanctions.

Human rights groups have noted that while some political prisoners were released, 2025 was the deadliest year on record for Rohingya refugees fleeing the country, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
