Rapist convicted after 23 years

A jury at Manchester Crown Court has convicted 52-year-old Paul Quinn of a brutal attack on a young mother that took place over two decades ago.

The case gained national notoriety after Andrew Malkinson was exonerated by the Court of Appeal in 2023, having served nearly two decades in prison for a crime he did not commit.

Malkinson, who attended the trial, described himself as a 'handy patsy' for the police and criticized the initial investigation's failures.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is currently conducting a wide-ranging probe into the handling of the original case and the missed opportunities to identify Quinn earlier.
