India's Delimitation Bill Debate

The Indian Parliament is facing a heated confrontation over the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill and the accompanying Delimitation Bill.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin have labeled the move a 'calculated deception' designed to erode the federal balance of power.

They fear that redrawing constituency boundaries will penalize states that have successfully implemented population control measures, effectively rewarding the more populous northern Hindi belt.

The government maintains that the overhaul is necessary for democratic legitimacy, but the opposition is demanding immediate implementation of women's quotas without tying them to the contentious delimitation exercise.
