GWR to be nationalised

The UK government has announced that Great Western Railway will be brought into public ownership in December, ending 30 years of private operation.

The move makes GWR the 11th train operator to be nationalised since the Labour government took office in 2024.

Officials stated that nationalisation is necessary to improve reliability and provide better value for taxpayers.

The transition will also include Govia Thameslink Railway, which runs Southern and the Gatwick Express.

This shift marks a major reversal of the rail privatization policies enacted in the 1990s.
