Firefighters Killed as Wildfires Ravage France and Spain

Two firefighters were killed battling a wildfire near Bordeaux-Merignac Airport in southwestern France, as extreme heat continued to fuel dangerous conditions across Europe.

The fatalities occurred in the Gironde region, while another wildfire in the Var department burned through over 1,200 acres and continued spreading toward the town of Cotignac.

France has suffered record wildfire destruction by mid-July, with President Emmanuel Macron saying the country had not faced this many outbreaks since the end of World War II. Meanwhile, firefighters in Spain struggled to contain the country's largest wildfire of the year, and severe hailstorms were forecast for the Balkans.
