Tony Gonzales to retire

Representative Tony Gonzales confirmed he will file his retirement papers on Tuesday, ending his tenure in the U.S. House.

The third-term lawmaker had been facing an investigation by the House Ethics Committee and a growing threat of expulsion after admitting to a relationship with a subordinate.

Gonzales had previously announced he would not seek reelection but opted for an earlier exit as pressure mounted from both parties.

His departure further narrows the Republican majority in the chamber as they return from a two-week recess.
