United managed to keep a clean sheet despite a makeshift defensive line that included former Arsenal youngster Ayden Heaven.

Chelsea's struggles continued as they recorded only one shot on target and lost key players Estevao Willian and Enzo Fernandez to injury.

The result leaves Manchester United in third place with five matches remaining, while Chelsea's hopes for a top-five finish are now in serious doubt.

Interim boss Michael Carrick received praise from former players for his tactical management of the injury-plagued squad.
