Woman dies in NYC manhole fall

Tragedy struck Midtown Manhattan on Monday night when a woman fell to her death through an open utility hole on Fifth Avenue.

Donike Gocaj, 56, had just exited her vehicle near the Cartier Mansion when she stepped into the uncovered opening, which officials believe was dislodged by a passing truck just minutes earlier.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Gocaj was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma.

Con Edison and the NYPD are conducting a joint investigation into the incident, which has reignited public fears about aging urban infrastructure and pedestrian safety.
