Trump considers Venezuela statehood

President Donald Trump has sparked international debate by suggesting that Venezuela could become the 51st American state.

Trump cited the country's estimated $40 trillion in oil reserves as a primary reason for the move, following the capture of former leader Nicolas Maduro earlier this year.

Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, has forcefully rejected the proposal, stating that her country is 'not a colony' and will defend its sovereignty.

White House spokespeople have attempted to clarify the remarks, describing them as a 'serious consideration' of the nation's future status within the U.S. sphere of influence.
