Ali al-Zaidi named Iraq PM-designate

Iraq's president has nominated businessman Ali al-Zaidi as the country's new prime minister-designate following weeks of political deadlock.

Al-Zaidi, a newcomer to politics, was endorsed by the dominant Shiite parliamentary bloc.

His nomination comes after former PM Nouri al-Maliki withdrew his bid following pressure from the United States.

Al-Zaidi now faces the daunting task of forming a coalition government that can navigate the intense rivalry between the U.S. and Iran.

Observers suggest his business background may help him prioritize economic reforms in the war-torn nation.
