Chagos Islands deal in jeopardy

Chagos Islands deal in jeopardy

Health Secretary Wes Streeting admitted that the agreement is now 'in tatters' after the U.S. withdrew its initial support.

The deal would have seen the UK lease the strategic military outpost for 99 years while returning sovereignty of the remaining islands.

Shadow defense officials have labeled the U-turn a 'humiliation' for the government, while indigenous Chagos leaders have vowed to continue their protests.

The United Nations is also investigating claims that the proposed eviction of recently returned islanders would breach international human rights law.
