Chinese AI startup DeepSeek is developing its own chip designed for inference rather than training new models, sources say.

The expansion into semiconductor development marks a major strategic shift for the company widely hailed as China's AI champion.

If successful, the chip could add to challenges faced by Chinese tech giant Huawei and further escalate the US-China technology race.

Beijing is also reportedly considering curbing overseas access to its most advanced AI models.
