India’s Women’s Reservation Bill Collapses

The failure of the Women's Reservation Bill to secure a two-thirds majority in the Indian Parliament has been described by opposition leaders as a 'big win for democracy' and a blow to the government's control.

While the BJP blamed the Congress party for taking an anti-women stance, opposition figures argued that the bill was flawed and linked to a contentious delimitation exercise.

The defeat is the first major legislative setback for the Modi administration in 12 years and has highlighted deep divisions over federal balance and seat redistribution.

The government has since deferred the proposal indefinitely.
