DHS official purse thief sentenced
Mario Bustamante Leiva was convicted in connection to a string of high-profile thefts across the nation's capital.
Prosecutors stated that Leiva did not recognize Noem when he grabbed the purse, which contained $3,000 in cash.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro characterized the defendant as a predator who came to the city illegally to target citizens.
The incident has been used by the administration to justify the continued deployment of the National Guard to Washington, D.C. to combat rising crime.
