FISA extension passes House

House lawmakers voted early Friday morning to extend Section 702 of FISA until April 30, narrowly avoiding an expiration of the government's warrantless spying powers.

The temporary measure was a setback for Speaker Mike Johnson and the White House, who had pushed for a five-year renewal.

A bloc of 20 privacy-minded Republicans joined Democrats to block the longer extension, demanding more stringent protections for American citizens.

The Senate quickly followed suit, passing the 10-day extension by voice vote to allow for further negotiations.
