Hampshire College to Close Permanently

The board of trustees voted for the permanent closure following years of budget deficits and a failure to secure a sustainable long-term partner.

Hampshire, which counts filmmaker Ken Burns among its alumni, had long been known for its alternative approach to higher education.

The announcement marks the end of a tumultuous saga for the institution, which nearly closed in 2019 before a successful fundraising campaign provided a temporary reprieve.

Current students will be assisted in transferring to other institutions as the college begins its final academic term.
