Hassabis Urges US-Led Global AI Watchdog

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis called for a US-led international body to test and regulate “frontier” AI models, warning that society has a “precious window” to prepare for the technology's rapid advancement.

The Nobel laureate argued that the US is best placed to lead because of its AI expertise and that the watchdog should have the power to hit the brakes if models become too dangerous.

His proposal comes amid growing concerns about the existential risks of artificial general intelligence.

The push for governance reflects the intensifying AI arms race between the US and China.
