NASA's Voyager 1 power crisis
Voyager 1 is the most distant human-made object in space, currently exploring the interstellar medium billions of miles from Earth.
The unexpected drop in power has prompted a long-term plan to keep the spacecraft's basic systems alive for as long as possible.
Despite its age and the extreme conditions of deep space, the probe continues to transmit valuable data back to NASA. Scientists hope to maintain communication with Voyager 1 through the end of the decade before its power eventually fails completely.
