Record-Breaking El Niño Expected This Year

El Niño, which warms surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific, is projected to surpass past records in intensity, according to climate scientist Jim Reid.

The event could trigger severe food supply disruptions, especially across Asia and Africa, and already the Indian finance ministry has asked insurers to fast-track crop insurance enrolment in 315 vulnerable districts.

Governments and humanitarian agencies are mobilising contingency plans, but the scale of the expected impact is alarming.

The warning comes as Europe and North America experienced record early summer heatwaves, compounding climate fears.
