Japan tsunami warning after major quake

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a high-level tsunami alert following a massive undersea earthquake centered off the Sanriku coast.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi established an emergency task force and urged residents in coastal areas to seek higher ground immediately.

Tremors were felt as far away as Tokyo, shaking large buildings and disrupting transportation networks across northern Honshu.

While initial waves have been recorded at several ports, officials warn that subsequent surges could be significantly larger and more destructive.
