Pope Leo visits Equatorial Guinea

Pope Leo visits Equatorial Guinea

In a bold conclusion to his African journey, Pope Leo XIV landed in Bata, Equatorial Guinea, where he was greeted by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

The Pope's itinerary includes a visit to a notorious prison and a Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

During his speeches, he urged African youth to stay and serve their own countries rather than migrate, while also condemning the exploitation of the continent's resources.

Human rights activists have expressed concern that the visit could lend legitimacy to Obiang's long-standing repressive regime.
