Virginia Joins National Popular Vote

Virginia Joins National Popular Vote

With Virginia's participation, the compact now includes states representing 222 of the 270 electoral votes needed to take effect.

Spanberger's decision follows a long-running push by Democrats to reform the presidential election system after several candidates won the popular vote but lost the presidency.

Critics have argued the move is unconstitutional and effectively disenfranchises voters in smaller states.

The compact will only be activated once it reaches the 270-vote threshold, a goal that supporters believe is now within reach.
