Japan Hit by Major Earthquake

Japan Hit by Major Earthquake

The undersea tremor occurred at a depth of 10km off the Sanriku Coast, with the resulting shockwaves felt as far away as Tokyo.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has established an emergency task force to coordinate rescue efforts and assess damage in the Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido prefectures.

Residents in low-lying areas were urged to seek higher ground immediately as the Japan Meteorological Agency maintained a 'huge' earthquake advisory.

While no major casualties have been reported, the risk of powerful aftershocks remains high.
