Super Typhoon Sinlaku hits Pacific islands

Super Typhoon Sinlaku hits Pacific islands

The 'extremely dangerous' Super Typhoon Sinlaku is battering the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam with winds of up to 173mph.

Forecasters have issued life-threatening flood warnings and warned of lengthy power outages as the storm, the strongest early-season typhoon on record, moves across the region.

Tens of thousands of residents have been urged to shelter in place as buildings have reportedly collapsed and debris is flying 'left and right.' The National Weather Service described the storm as a significant threat to life and property, with the eyewall making landfall on several remote islands.

Emergency response teams are on high alert as the storm continues its slow and destructive path through the Western Pacific.
