Péter Magyar ousts Viktor Orbán

Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule in Hungary has come to an end following a record voter turnout that favored the center-right opposition leader Péter Magyar.

The prime minister-elect has already moved to dismantle Orbán's influence network, accusing the outgoing administration of shredding confidential documents before the transition of power.

European leaders have welcomed the result, hoping it will anchor Budapest back into the EU mainstream and end the vetoes on critical funding for Ukraine.

Magyar now faces the significant challenge of undoing a system where many of the country's institutions remain controlled by Orbán-aligned oligarchs.
