New Jersey Congressman Reveals Depression Battle

New Jersey Congressman Reveals Depression Battle

New Jersey Republican Representative Tom Kean Jr. returned to Capitol Hill on Tuesday after nearly four months of unexplained absence, disclosing from the House floor that he had been battling severe depression requiring hospitalization.

Kean, 57, said he owed his constituents an explanation and revealed he was one of an estimated 48 million Americans treated for the condition.

While Democratic colleagues expressed sympathy, some privately acknowledge they still see his seat as a target.

Kean's staff clarified that the congressman would not answer questions from the press about his absence.
