Sony AI Robot Beats Pro Players
Ace is the first robotic system capable of matching the speed and precision of elite human athletes in a real-world competitive sport.
Unlike previous attempts at ping-pong robots, Ace learned to play through experience rather than being manually programmed.
The robot features nine camera eyes that follow the ball’s logo to measure its spin with incredible accuracy.
Researchers say this breakthrough could presage an array of other applications for similarly adept robots in complex physical environments.
While Ace won three out of five matches against pro players, its makers admit there is still work to be done to reach world-champion levels.
