Congo Ebola center torched
An Ebola treatment center in the town of Rwampara, near Bunia, has been set on fire by an angry crowd as tensions over the latest outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo boil over.
The violence erupted after family and friends of a suspected victim, a beloved local footballer, were prevented from taking his body for a traditional burial due to health restrictions.
Police were forced to use tear gas and fire warning shots to disperse the crowd, which attempted to retrieve the body by force.
Health officials warn that such incidents of mistrust and misinformation are severely hampering efforts to contain the rapidly spreading Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
