ICE Halts Vehicle Stops After Two Fatal Shootings

ICE leadership directed Enforcement and Removal Operations personnel to halt traffic stops until further notice following the fatal shootings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and a 26-year-old Colombian national in Biddeford, Maine.

The Maine shooting, captured on security video, drew hundreds of protesters to Senator Susan Collins’ office and prompted the state House speaker to demand ICE leave the state.

The deaths are the latest in a string of fatal encounters during immigration operations under the Trump administration.

The policy shift marks a major reversal for an agency that had expanded vehicle-based enforcement to boost arrest numbers.
