Canada's gas tax suspension begins

The tax freeze was implemented following record-setting spikes in fuel costs driven by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

While the move has been welcomed by consumers, economists warn that the relief may be short-lived if global energy supplies remain restricted.

Statistics Canada reported that airfares and food prices have also been impacted by the soaring cost of jet fuel and transport.

The suspension is part of a broader federal strategy to address an affordability crisis that has pushed inflation to 2.4 per cent.
