Shark fatally mauls Australian diver

A 38-year-old man has died after being attacked by a great white shark while spearfishing off Rottnest Island in Western Australia.

The victim, identified as Steven Mattaboni, was a father of two and a prolific member of the local fishing community.

Witnesses reported seeing a 16-foot shark in the area at the time of the incident, which occurred in front of Mattaboni's friends.

The tragedy marks the second fatal shark attack in Australia so far in 2026, prompting local authorities to issue fresh safety warnings.
