1926 Irish Census Records Released

Taoiseach Micheál Martin hailed the publication as a landmark initiative that allows citizens to 'step back in time' and explore their family history.

The records include details on now-extinct professions such as lamplighters and umbrella fixers, as well as the names of children living in mother and baby homes.

Only 1% of the returns were completed in the Irish language, reflecting the linguistic shift of the era.

The digital release follows three years of intensive work to preserve and index over 750,000 individual household returns.
