El Salvador mass gang trial
El Salvador has commenced a massive judicial proceeding against 486 alleged members of the MS-13 gang.
The trial is being held within the CECOT mega-prison, where defendants appeared with shaved heads and in chains.
Prosecutors have leveled charges including thousands of murders and acts of torture against the group.
This mass trial is the latest development in President Nayib Bukele's controversial state of emergency, which has significantly reduced the national homicide rate but drawn criticism from human rights organizations.
