Aung San Suu Kyi Sentence Cut
In a surprise announcement on Friday, Myanmar's state-run media revealed that thousands of prisoners would be granted clemency, including top figures from the former democratic government.
Aung San Suu Kyi, who has faced a litany of charges since her ouster, had her total sentence reduced by one-sixth, though she remains in custody.
Former President Win Myint was allowed to return home after serving more than five years in prison.
Human rights groups have cautiously welcomed the releases but noted that hundreds of political detainees still remain behind bars under the junta's rule.
