DeSantis Closes 'Alligator Alcatraz' Jail

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has ordered the immediate and permanent closure of the Everglades detention facility, infamously nicknamed 'Alligator Alcatraz,' which had been used to house migrants under the Trump administration's border crackdown.

The remote site, surrounded by alligator-infested swampland, became a symbol of harsh immigration enforcement, costing taxpayers a staggering $1.2 million per day to operate.

Civil rights organizations had long condemned the facility for its inhumane living conditions, and international bodies had levied harsh criticism against the U.S. for its use.

The closure represents a scaling back of one of the most extreme examples of immigration deterrence tactics, though the broader debate over border security remains highly charged.
