Iraq elects Nizar Amidi as President

Amidi's election is seen as a crucial step toward stabilizing Iraq's government as the country navigates the economic and security fallout of the regional war in Iran.

In his first statement as president-elect, he pledged an 'Iraq First' policy and vowed to work toward national unity among the country's competing political blocs.

The vote took place under heavy security in Baghdad, with many lawmakers expressing hope that the new presidency will facilitate the formation of a full cabinet.

While the role is primarily symbolic, Amidi will be responsible for formally tasking the largest parliamentary bloc with naming a prime minister.
