Slovakia will hold a referendum on lifelong payments for country’s leaders

Slovakia will hold a referendum this summer to decide on whether to cancel lifelong payments for Prime Minister Robert Fico and other leaders after their terms end.

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini announced on Monday that the vote is set for July 4.

Slovaks will also vote on reopening the special prosecutor's office, which dealt with major crime and corruption.

The referendum follows a petition by the Democrats, a pro-Western opposition party.

However, it won't include a question on early parliamentary elections, which was ruled unconstitutional.

Fico has been a divisive figure since returning to power in 2023, prompting numerous protests.
