On Sunday evening, Hungary's opposition leader – of the Tisza party – Peter Magyar won in what is being considered Europe’s most consequential election this year.
“Today, the Hungarian people said yes to Europe, they said yes to a free Hungary.
They said yes to represent them, to help them, to put the country in order,” Magyar said in his victory speech.
Accepting defeat in Budapest after 16 years in power, Prime Minister Viktor Orban – leader of the Fidesz party – said the “election result is painful for us, but clear.”
Orban is a close ally to both the U.S. and Russia, and during his time in power, strained Hungary’s relationship with the European Union (EU) after repeatedly frustrating the bloc's efforts to support Ukraine.
Magyar, however, promised Hungary will “once again” be a strong ally of both the EU and NATO. Additionally, he vowed to represent supporters of the Fidesz party regardless of if they are “angry” with the election result.
