Erin O’Toole spoke to Global News on Thursday about his decision to join a new advisory committee on Canada-U.S. economic relations, which includes multiple prominent former Conservative MPs and top industry voices.
O’Toole told Global News that Prime Minister Mark Carney has “reset” the tone of Canada-U.S. relations and said he believes the prime minister has a “very good handle” on international business negotiations, such as the upcoming talks on the Canada-US-Mexico (CUSMA) trade agreement.
The former Conservative leader said the advisory committee is a diverse team, both politically and geographically and is well-suited to tackle the issues that such trade talks could bring up.
Asked about what issues the committee needs to consider as Canada prepares for trade talks with the U.S., O’Toole said the government has to determine how to “balance” against the dominance of U.S. tech giants like Meta and Google.
