New Jersey governor deploys state police to Newark detention center amid protests
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill says state police will create designated protest zones and vehicle checkpoints outside an immigration detention center in Newark that has been the site of violent demonstrations and arrests in recent days.
The Democrat said the decision comes as clashes between protesters and federal immigration enforcement agents outside Delaney Hall have intensified.
She said the situation “has grown unsafe” and “completely unacceptable.” The protests began last Friday after immigrant advocates said detainees inside launched a hunger strike over poor living conditions.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the GEO Group, the private firm that runs the facility, didn’t immediately comment.
