A shark has fatally mauled a diver off an Australian tourist island, police say.

Police said the 38-year-old man was spearfishing with a friend on Saturday when he was attacked near Rottnest Island.

The victim was near a dive boat when he was bitten on the legs.

He was taken to the island, but paramedics could not resuscitate him.

Lifeguards reported seeing a five-meter white shark in the area before the attack.

This is Australia’s first shark fatality since January.

Rottnest Island's last fatal shark attack was in 2011.

Australia has averaged more than three fatal shark attacks a year in recent decades.
