Supporters of the Hungarian opposition party flooded the streets of Budapest in celebration on Sunday night.
With most votes counted, Peter Magyar’s Tisza party was slated for a landslide victory that projected a supermajority in Parliament, bringing Viktor Orban’s 16-year incumbency to an end.
Some Budapest residents expressed shock over the outcome, “After at least 16 years, we feel like there is a hope.
We feel like there is a hope that Hungary can start walking into the right direction.”
Many expressed relief across Europe amid Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. “Orban has been systematically blocking everything Europe wanted to carry out and he has been Putin’s mole within the European community.
He defends a man who is completely unpresentable,” Jose Ramon Urquijo, a historian from Madrid, said.
The election had long been anticipated amid Orban's frequent clashes with Brussels during his 16-year rule, over issues ranging from immigration to his close ties to Russia.
