An ABC News reporter ducked for cover as gunshots rang out near the White House on Saturday (23 May), when a gunman opened fire at a security checkpoint.

A person approached the checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, pulled a weapon out of his bag, and began firing, according to a Secret Service statement posted on social media.

Officers returned fire and shot the suspect, who was later taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the agency said.

It marked the third incident of gunfire near U.S. President Donald Trump in the past month.
