UK border official and former Hong Kong cop convicted of spying charges in Britain
A U.K. border official and a former Hong Kong police officer have been convicted of assisting China’s spy agency by conducting “shadow” policing operations in Britain.
Peter Wai, 38, and Bill Yuen, 65, both dual Chinese and British nationals, were convicted Thursday in London.
Prosecutors said they acted as “shadow” police by posing as legitimate officers or intelligence agents to conduct surveillance and gather information about Hong Kong pro-democracy supporters and others deemed “persons of interest." A jury in the Central Criminal Court found them guilty on charges that they violated the National Security Act by assisting a foreign spy service.
