The sound of gunfire sparked panic among journalists, with reporters rushed to the press briefing room as Secret Service officers responded to a shooting near a White House checkpoint.
Authorities said the suspect opened fire before Secret Service returned fire, with the suspect later dying in hospital and a bystander also injured.
The incident triggered a brief White House lockdown, while officials confirmed no Secret Service personnel were injured.
President Donald Trump was not impacted by the shooting.
