Asylum seekers will be made to pay up to £10,000 towards the cost of their accommodation and support once they start earning, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced.
They must pay off the full amount before they can be eligible for settled status under the plans.
Eligible adults will likely pay off an amount each month above a set threshold – similar to a student loan.
Home Office minister Alex Norris makes a statement to MPs in the House of Commons on asylum accommodation and ending the use of hotels.
'Progress is being made but we must go further' Mr Norris told the Commons. 'That means scaling up our use of larger, more basic facilities,' he added.
He announced that three new ex-military sites are now up for consideration in Suffolk, Oxfordshire and North Yorkshire.
