Three firefighters were killed and two more were injured while battling wildfires on the Utah-Colorado border.
The U.S. Wildland Fire Service says crews were responding to the Knowles and Gore fires on Saturday when the deaths occurred.
Wildfire activity in the western U.S. has intensified as the region deals with hot, dry weather.
The Cottonwood Fire in southwestern Utah has grown to more than 360 square kilometres.
Utah’s governor declared a state of emergency earlier in the week and his Colorado counterpart has announced a disaster emergency response.
