Rohingya Sea Crossing Tragedy
The UNHCR reported that more than one in seven refugees who attempted the crossing last year did not survive.
Most of those fleeing are from overcrowded camps in Bangladesh, seeking safety and better opportunities in Southeast Asian nations.
A recent shipwreck in mid-April has left an additional 250 people feared dead, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe.
Survivors of these voyages often recount harrowing stories of overloaded vessels capsizing in rough seas and a lack of regional search and rescue coordination.
